در ابتدا نیاز هست که تعریف جامع و دقیقی از یک کد ساخت داشته باشیم:

A construction code may be defined as a set of rules of procedure and standards of materials designed to secure uniformity and protect public interest, usually established by a public agency. Codes used in the chemical process industry include the American ASME VIII-2 for pressure vessels and ANSI B.31.1 and ASME B.31.3 for piping.
Corresponding British codes are BS 55004 and BS 5135.5 A summary of relevant codes and standards is shown in Table 10.1. Construction codes specify requirements for written weld procedures and procedure qualification tests as well as qualification tests for welders and welding operators. Codes covering qualification of weld procedures and welders are, typically, ASME IX,6 DIN 8560,7 BS 48708 and BS 4871.9

اگر براساس دیدگاه بررسی ایمنی و طراحی در مجموعه ASME قابل بررسی باشد کدهای ASME B31.1 و ASME B31.3 f به عنوان کد ساخت معرفی خواهد شد.

کد ساخت به صورت دقیق به سندی گفته می شود که تمامی مراحل ساخت اعم از طراحی، خرید و تامین متریال، اجرا و بازرسی را شامل شود. در میان کدهای ASME B31 شماره 1 ( power piping) و شماره 3(Process Piping) به عنوان مطرح ترین کدهای ساخت شناخته می شوند.

در واقع کدهای ساخت شامل مواردی از قبیل بهره برداری و یا inservice code نیستند.
